Family Minivans and Three-Row SUVs for Northeast Suburbs

Pacifica, Voyager, Durango, Grand Cherokee L and Grand Wagoneer compared for Northeast suburban school runs, with seating, cargo, AWD and prices.

2027 Chrysler Pacifica

The suburban school run in the Northeast has its own geometry. In Westchester, North Jersey, the Main Line and the towns west of Boston, a family vehicle spends the week squeezing into pickup loops, crowded lacrosse lots and driveways and garages laid out decades ago for smaller cars. It also has to survive January on salted roads and still haul a travel team's bags to a tournament in another state.

Five Stellantis three-row choices cover most of that ground: two minivans, two midsize SUVs and one large one. They differ less in raw space than in how that space is reached, what it costs and how the whole thing fits an older garage.

Sliding doors versus swinging doors

In a crowded lot, the minivan's trick is geometry. Both the Pacifica and the Voyager have power sliding side doors, so a child can climb in beside a neighbor's SUV without anyone worrying about dings. The Pacifica's second row sits on Stow 'n Go seats that fold into the floor on LX, Select and Limited, while Pinnacle swaps in removable captain's chairs in the second row and keeps Stow 'n Go in the third.

Hinged doors on an SUV are fine on a driveway and clumsy in a tight space, particularly with a third row to reach. The Grand Cherokee L, Durango and Grand Wagoneer offer more height off the ground and more towing, which suits some families better. Whichever you choose, take the vehicle to the worst parking spot you use weekly and open every door.

The numbers side by side

Lengths and cargo figures are the manufacturers' own. Prices are starting MSRP before destination and change often. The Voyager is a 2026 model that Chrysler says the Pacifica LX replaces for 2027, while the others are 2027. Jeep's Grand Cherokee L figures come from its 2026 sheet.

Vehicle Length Seats Cargo behind 3rd / 2nd / 1st row Starting MSRP
Chrysler Pacifica 204.3 in 7 or 8 32.3 / 87.5 / 140.5 cu ft $41,595
Chrysler Voyager (2026) 203.8 in 7 32.3 / 87.5 / 140.5 cu ft $41,395
Dodge Durango about 201 in 5 to 7 17.2 / 43.3 / 85.1 cu ft $43,875
Jeep Grand Cherokee L 204.9 in 6 or 7 17.2 / 46.9 / 84.6 cu ft $41,730
Jeep Grand Wagoneer 216.1 in (228.1 in L) 7 or 8 27.9 / 70.8 / 116.7 cu ft $65,000

The Wagoneer's second and first-row figures are for the standard body, and the long-wheelbase version holds 42.6 cubic feet behind the third row. Add destination: Chrysler lists $1,995 on the Pacifica and Voyager, Dodge and Jeep list $1,995 on the Durango and Grand Cherokee, and Jeep lists $2,795 on the Grand Wagoneer.

Minivans: Pacifica and Voyager

The numbers favor the vans. The Pacifica and Voyager hold 32.3 cubic feet behind the third row, nearly double the 17.2 that the Durango and Grand Cherokee L offer. With the seats folded flat, 140.5 cubic feet is enough for a hockey bag, a goalie's gear and a folding table, with room to spare behind the front seats.

The Pacifica uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 287 hp, a nine-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available on Select, Limited and Pinnacle. AWD changes the EPA rating from 19/28 mpg city/highway to 17/25, and on the Pinnacle it costs $2,995 more ($54,910 versus $57,905). There is no plug-in hybrid for 2027. The LX, Chrysler says, takes over from the Voyager and brings power sliding doors and heated front seats, but not AWD.

The Voyager LX is front-wheel drive only. That matters in Vermont-bound ski traffic less than it does on a Boston side street in February, so the winter plan should include winter tires either way. Towing is modest: Chrysler lists 1,500 pounds for the Voyager and 3,600 with the Pacifica's Trailer Tow Group. That covers bikes and a small utility trailer, not a boat.

Families that need more: Durango and Grand Cherokee L

The Durango is the SUV for people who want a trailer. Every 2027 Durango has standard all-wheel drive and a V8, starting with the 5.7-liter HEMI at 360 hp in the GT AWD HEMI V8, which tows 7,200 pounds. The Tow 'n Go package costs $6,295 and raises the rating to 8,700 pounds. Second-row captain's chairs add $1,715.

The cost of that power is fuel. The GT AWD HEMI V8 is rated 14/22/17 mpg city/highway/combined, and Dodge recommends mid-grade. A household that rarely tows may find the minivan's 19/28 easier to live with on a daily I-287 commute.

The Grand Cherokee L is the more civilized choice. It starts at $41,730 for the Laredo L, with a 293 hp V6 on the lowest trims and a 324 hp turbo four from Laredo Altitude up. Four-wheel drive is optional on Laredo, Laredo X, Laredo Altitude and Limited, and standard on Limited Reserve and Summit. It tows 6,200 pounds. Jeep lists a Rear-Seat Entertainment Group at $1,995 on the Summit.

The big one: Grand Wagoneer

The Grand Wagoneer is the right answer for a family of six or seven with enough luggage for two weeks on Cape Cod. It starts at $65,000, and the long wheelbase adds $3,000. The Hurricane twin-turbo six makes 420 hp and 468 lb-ft and tows up to 10,000 pounds on the standard body with 4x4 and the 3.92 axle. An eight-passenger seating package is $795, and the Rear-Seat Entertainment Group, with 10.1-inch screens, is $2,595.

Mind the size. At 216.1 inches long (228.1 for the L) and 94.0 inches wide at the mirrors, it is the vehicle most likely to make a pre-war garage or a Hoboken street feel small. Compare the Pacifica at 204.3 inches long and 90.4 inches wide with mirrors.

Picking by suburb and routine

  • Tight lots and daily drop-offs (Brookline, Montclair, Scarsdale): Pacifica, for the doors and the cargo floor.
  • Hilly roads and long weekends in the mountains: Pacifica with AWD or a Grand Cherokee L with 4x4.
  • A boat, a camper or a horse trailer: Durango with Tow 'n Go, or the Wagoneer.
  • A larger group and a long commute on I-95 or the Turnpike: Grand Wagoneer, which has three-zone climate control on the base trim and four-zone on Summit.

Rear entertainment is worth pricing separately. The Pacifica's Theater Group is $1,395 on the Pinnacle with seatback screens, and the Family Tech Group adds a family camera for $1,395 on the Select or $1,895 on the Limited.

Prices and availability shift through the model year, so confirm the exact vehicle on the manufacturer's site before you commit.
